The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that disabled people in Sierra Leone (the blue mark shows Sierra Leone in relation to the global map) make up approximately ten percent of a population of 6 million, but the actual figure is likely to be much higher, due to the impact of ten years of a brutal civil war. Disabled people are often stigmatised by society and with severely limited access to education and economic opportunities in the country, it is not surprising that they constitute a significant percentage of those living in abject poverty.
But then people can make difference! Take the story of Abs Dumbuya for instance....as a disabled person in Sierra Leone, his prospects were somewhat bleak. But everything changed for him, when he received anonymously funding from someone in the UK. This enabled him to study for his A-Levels and a BEng (Hons.) in Engineering, Diploma in Technology Enterprise and subsequently complete his PhD. This life-changing generosity has given Abs the opportunity to become independent through gainful employment and making a contribution to society. Later, when he learnt after Dorothy Springer's death in 2003 that she had been his anonymous sponsor, he was overwhelmed by her kindness and it inspired him to set up the Trust in memory of Dorothy Springer as a way of helping the most disadvantaged in Sierra Leone! The first meeting took place on Saturday, 13th January 2007, when it was agreed that the Trust would apply to The Charity Commission to become a Charitable Trust and was declared a Trust in July 2007. A list of the Trustees and Volunteers is given here:
